Believers identify with Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection through baptism.

Baptism is a public declaration of your faith in Christ. It’s one of the most important and symbolic gestures you can make during your journey of faith, and Grace is here to guide you if you’re ready to profess your faith through baptism.

We ask everyone who wants to be baptized at Grace to go through our baptism class.

Our Baptism class takes place over two Sundays. The first week we cover what baptism is and is not, that way there’s no confusion about what you’re doing as you are baptized. The second half of the class is designed to help you prepare to tell your story as part of your baptism.

What is baptism?

Baptism is a symbolic representation of the beginning of the Christian life.

  • It’s a symbol of a believer’s spiritual death and resurrection with Jesus. Romans 6:2-5
  • It’s a symbol of the washing and cleansing of a believer’s sins by Jesus’ blood. Titus 3:5 and Acts 22:16
  • It’s an outward sign of an inward change.
  • Baptism is commanded of believers. Matthew 28:19 and Acts 2:38
  • Baptism is for a public identification with Jesus and His Church.

Questions About Baptism

People often have questions regarding baptism. Take a few minutes to read our answers to the most common questions about baptism. If you still have questions that we don’t answer here, please reach out.

  • When is the best time to be baptized?

For everyone who decides to confess Jesus as Lord and follow Him, baptism is the first step of obedience to take. Anyone who has believed the good news that Jesus has saved them from their sin is ready to be baptized. (Acts 8:12)

  • Why should I be baptized?

For believers, baptism is a command, just like loving your neighbor is a command. (Matthew 28:19). Jesus was baptized. (Mark 1:9). The commitment that a believer makes to Jesus as Lord means following and obeying Him as Lord. (1 John 2:3). We publicly show our love and devotion to Jesus through baptism because He publicly showed His love for us on the cross. (Romans 5:8)

  • Do I need to be baptized again?

For us, there are two things we consider about a previous baptism: were you, by choice, a believer when you were baptized and how were you baptized. We follow Jesus’ example directly in our method at Grace, but if you were sprinkled as a believer, we recognize that as believer’s baptism for you personally. Beyond that, we evaluate every individual on a case-by-case basis to answer this question.

  • What's the difference between immersion, sprinkling and any other form of baptism?

Baptisms in the Bible were by immersion. The word in the Bible (baptizo) used for baptism means to submerge or immerse. Jesus was baptized by being immersed in the water and rising out of it. (Matthew 3:16, Mark 1:10) We follow Jesus’ example directly in our method at Grace, but if you were sprinkled as a believer, we recognize that as a believer’s baptism for you personally.

  • Does Grace baptize children? How old should my child be?

At Grace, we baptize someone when they’ve already placed their faith in Jesus as their Savior for the forgiveness of their sins and have committed to following Him. (Acts 10:47-48). We wait until children are old enough to express their own decision to follow Jesus and understand the meaning of baptism. As parents, we are their primary disciplers and we can point them to Jesus, but they make their own decision for Him. (Romans 10:9).
